Investigation launched after security camera captures man's violent attack on dog

Police are investigating distressing security camera footage of a man violently attacking a dog in Rolleston.

The video footage from a Rolleston property shows the man repeatedly striking and kicking a dog he was walking on Thursday night.

The dog can be heard yelping and whimpering in pain during the incident on Park Lane near Levi Park.

The homeowner said she reported the incident to the SPCA and provided the video evidence.

"I’ve now provided all the information to the SPCA so they can follow up," she said.

"It was not a pleasant thing to see on my cameras this morning."

A police spokeswoman said a report was filed about the man seen in the January 9 footage.

Police are following lines of inquiry to identify him.

A resident also claimed they had previously seen the same man abusing the dog.

The resident reported it to police but said no action was taken at the time.

An SPCA spokesperson said the complaint was likely still being processed but it will "certainly commence an investigation" into the incident.
